Istanbul is one of those cities that never really leaves you. The first time I landed there i remember the smell of roasted chestnuts mixing with the salty air from the Bosphorus. It is not just East meets West its history meets modern chaos all packed into one crazy beautiful city. So if you are planning a trip let me tell you the spots and best places to visit in istanbul.
Hagia Sophia – The Icon
This one is obvious but still blows you away. Hagia Sophia started as a church, turned into a mosque then a museum and now again a mosque. The dome inside ? Feels like its floating. I sat there for an hour, just looking up neck hurting but worth it.
Blue Mosque ( Sultan Ahmed Mosque )
Hagia Sophia stands the famous Blue Mosque. Dont go expecting neon blue its called that because of the blue Iznik tiles inside. If you catch it at sunset the minarets light up against the sky… unreal.
Grand Bazaar – Organized Chaos
Imagine walking into a maze with 4000+ shops selling everything from gold to fake sneakers. I went for “just a look” and ended up haggling for a lamp I never even needed. But that is the fun you get lost, bargain and drink apple tea with strangers.
Bosphorus Cruise
Take a ferry or a cheap public boat ride. You’ll see palaces, old wooden houses, and the line where Europe literally meets Asia. I took the ride on a normal Tuesday afternoon and it felt like the city was putting on a show only for me.
Topkapi Palace
This place feels like a super strong history class. The Ottoman kings lived here, and walking past the treasure full of swords and shiny jewels makes you feel like you’re inside a film scene.
Galata Tower
Climb (or take the elevator ) up Galata Tower for one of the best views of Istanbul. Honestly it is touristy but I did not care. Standing up there you see the Golden Horn, the Bosphorus and the bridges it makes you realize how big and alive this city is.
Spice Bazaar
Smaller than the Grand Bazaar but smells way better. Spices, Turkish delight and saffron its a food lovers paradise. I bought way too much sumac and my kitchen smelled like Istanbul for months.
Balat & Fener Neighborhoods
This is where you see colorful houses, narrow streets and kids playing football while cats sleep on car roofs. No big landmarks, just everyday Istanbul life. And honestly sometimes thats even better than the famous spots.
Final Thought
Istanbul is not a city you “check off” in a trip. It’s messy, loud, beautiful, and welcoming all at once. You’ll leave with too many photos, a few extra kilos from all the baklava and already planning when you’ll return.
